Mary Brittain BA Hons, FRSA, is a self-taught painter working mainly in oils and soft pastels.

Her bold, colourful pictures draw heavily on the contents of her immediate surroundings in rural Worcestershire for their inspiration.

Gardening is a passion and a topic upon which, as freelance journalist, she
has written for both The Times and The Sunday Times newspapers. She also
has her own extensive garden, which she and her husband, have in the past,
opened to the public as part of the National Garden Scheme and where they
live surrounded by dogs, cats, hens and sheep.

Her intimate knowledge of her subject matter informs and strengthens Mary’s
vibrant flower, garden and greenhouse paintings.

“I’m a great believer in William Morris’s quote about having nothing in
your home that  you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.
Finding the beauty in everyday objects – the gleam in glass, the sheen on
silver or the translucency of china – is a challenge; but it’s nature’s
ever-changing and glorious palette that really lies at the heart of my art,”
she says.
